Photo printed on rubberstamped-acrylic paint background on deli paper -- a little trick I learned from Corinne Stubson. I'm still working on the virtue of patience -- I smudged the inkjet ink on this page -- ARGH!! The text on the right reads:
“A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle”
(Irina Dunn, 1970).
This saying is often wrongly attributed to Gloria Steinem. It was often repeated in the press after Steinem’s 2000 marriage at age 66 to South African-born business man David Bale, the 61 year-old father of actor Christian Bale. In a letter to the editors of Time, Ms. Steinem–yes she kept her maiden name–corrected the misattribution.
In your note on my new and happy marital partnership with David Bale, you credit me with the witticism “A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.” In fact, Irina Dunn, a distinguished Australian educator, journalist and politician, coined the phrase back in 1970 when she was a student at the University of Sydney. She paraphrased the philosopher who said, "Man needs God like fish needs a bicycle." Dunn deserves credit for creating such a popular and durable spoof of the old idea that women need men more than vice versa (Source).
